It’s almost like the troubles of this world never ends. Now, while that’s not a good way to start a fun guide for the weekend, we think it’s an excellent trigger to push you to rest. If you didn’t know, life would move so fast if you don’t get it to hold on. Back to it, whether you're a business owner managing endless responsibilities or an individual trying to balance work and personal life, taking time for yourself is crucial. This weekend is the perfect weekend to take good care of yourself and if you are generous, you could extend the care to those around you. We’ve put together 10 fun activities you can try in Nigeria and across the African region that will refresh your body, mind, and soul. We must also mention that these activities could be done anywhere in the world. So, don’t scroll without looking through.
1. Plan a Quick Getaway:
A change of scenery can do wonders for your mood and creativity. Nigeria offers countless hidden gems perfect for a spontaneous getaway. This might be the perfect weekend to explore Tarkwa Bay in Lagos, the natural springs of Ikogosi in Ekiti, or the majestic hills of Idanre, depending on your location. Tips: Consider checking local travel websites and lifestyle bloggers for expense content (access fee, accommodation, feeding expenses, etc).
2. Organize a Game Night with Friends:
If you are looking to keep it on a low, you should consider hanging out with friends or family for a lively game night. It’s cost effective, all you need are classic games like Monopoly or card games like Whot, or even traditional African games like Ayo. Of course you need a house to host this. (Hope you have one). Don't forget drinks and chop-chops. Actually, you can make it a love feast and tell them a week ahead to grab their drink or bring something to munch on when coming.
3. Explore a Local Market:
Looks like you would get to be a lifestyle blogger for a weekend. Our recommendation is that you have a budget prepared for this and you grab a friend who has eyes for great things. You could consider getting local raffia bags, tie and dye clothes, or even spices for your kitchen.
4. Attend a Live Music Event or Art Exhibition:
Nike Art Gallery is an example of a free exhibition center to go. Yes, there’s no charge. Also, some restaurants have lounges so they have live performances, local artists showcase and karaoke. Again, we hate to repeat this but it’s a great weekend to find a lifestyle blogger. That’s why they exist anyways, to be your guide to certain things and places.
5. Engage in a New Fitness Challenge:
It’s no news that half the population of the world is trying to work out. Not backed by fact, but of course, you can tell by the number of people in gym clothes and water bottles. If this is an idea that interests you, you might want to consider having a gym membership for a day, or try yoga. You could even go boxing or football playing in your local stadium/park. The whole point of fun is to have you break away from your usual, so consider it.
6. Go for a Nature Walk or Picnic:
There is nothing more rejuvenating than spending time in nature. But we recommend that when you pick nature, let it be a good time of nature. We hate to throw jabs but don’t go to conservation centers that are due for repair. Contrary to popular belief, Lagos does have quite a number of parks, just shift your focus to Ikeja Axis. If you are anywhere in the western world, you are absolutely even more lucky. Let’s think of it a bit, does solo picnic sound weird? Would you do it?
7. Indulge in a DIY Spa Day:
You should pamper yourself with a spa day at home. You could use readily available ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, and natural scrubs to create your spa treatments. Light some scented candles, play soothing music, and unwind with a facial, a long bath- depending on what your bathroom looks like, or get a manicure. It’s affordable, fun, and incredibly relaxing. Wepromise, this is even more fun than it sounds. We must warn you, some DIYs could flop. Also, you might want to check Pinterest for Inspiration.
8. Take a Cooking Class or Experiment with New Recipes:
If there’s anything that’s interesting, you should have seen some Twitter posts on new recipes or cooking experiments gone bad. So, if you would be experimenting this weekend based on our recommendation, ensure to use an old chef cookbook or new age chef style (YouTube and the likes). We must ask that you stay away from anything that has to do with buchi mix. It almost never ends well. If you do try this, please journal your recipes and record your experiments. You would thank ya for this.
9. Visit a Historical or Cultural Site:
Weheard that the Jaekel Museum is still in existence in railway garden in Lagos, Nigeria. That and many other historical sites are waiting for you to explore them. This might be a great weekend to use the train to Ibadan to go try some Amala, or visit a neighboring border town. Cheat code, you should dress like the locals, it makes the journey easier to navigate.
10. Practice Mindfulness and Meditation:
Dedicate some time to yourself this weekend by practicing mindfulness or meditation. Find a quiet place, sit comfortably, and focus on your breathing. A 10-minute session can significantly improve your mental well-being. To answer truthfully, when was the last time you caught a deep breath? Or paid attention to anything around you? Try it this weekend.
This is an excellent call to detoxify yourself. A reminder, self-care is not a luxury—it's a necessity! If you get to do anything on this list, do share with us on our socials @citylife or send us an email. We would be glad to share your experience with others.
